Day One Review and PPTWs for Days 2 & 3
The first round has come and gone and as expected there were a few surprises. The running thread has all the thoughts as the round went along, but it's probably best to take a look at one of the bigger surprises: James Carpenter at #25.
Running Draft Thread
Only 12 minutes to go! I'll be posting any comments from here on out on this thread. Please share your thoughts too.

Potential Seahawks
With the draft just hours away, I thought I would take a look at how each of the Seahawks' picks could shake out.
Cowboys and Patriots?
Mort's reporting that the Cowboys and Patriots are talking about a possible swap with the idea being the Pats want Cameron Jordan.
Interesting
Jason LaCanfora thinks that Andy Dalton could go #8 to the Titans. Not sure about that one. Sounds like Dave Razzano may have been his source on this one.
Early Draft Day Buzz
It sounds like the Bengals are actively shopping the #4 pick. It seems that they want to move down and take Andy Dalton.
Patriots aren't very high on any of the 3-4 DEs at #17. Might look to the o-line.

Draft Mailbag
We had an overwhelming number of questions mailed in from the Mustacheers regarding all sorts of draft topics. I have selected the very best and answered them in this year's Draft Mailbag

The Official HCM Mock Draft
Your party hosts all got together and did a crazy make-em-up where we were the GMs of the teams in the NFL. I took the AFC, Mr. F had the NFC East, Sean had the NFC West, Matt had the NFC North, and Erik had the NFC South. We mocked the first round and had a great time doing it (except for when Sean set the Seahawks back three years with his pick). Enjoy!
ERIK:
With the #1 pick I select Patrick Peterson CB, LSU.
Might seem crazy but let's think about this. From what I've read the consensus is that Peterson or Marcell Dareus is the best player in the draft. With the league as it is, someone who can help shut down the opposing team's passing game is more valuable than someone who can help shut down the run game. So why not just draft the best player first?
Also, I don't want some guy with a fake smile or the first name Blaine.

Welcome to The Mock
The Draft is just 10 days away. There are still a lot of questions to be answered between now and then. Please send me any questions that you may have and I will answer them in my fan-favorite Annual Draft Mailbag post. But for now, let's get to the new Mock Draft:
1. Carolina – Cam Newton, QB, Auburn
Let's get Da Schwam's take on this pick: "Cam 'Wayne' Newton says 'danke schon' to the Panthers for taking him first overall. What a long strange trip it's been for Cam. Normally I would say that's the way the cookie crumbles, but Cam 'Fig' Newton isn't a cookie, he's fruit and cake."
2. Denver – Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama
A good pick for the shitty Broncos.
3. Buffalo – Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M
I think the Bills will make the right choice and go with the impact defender. He would be an upgrade over any of the current pass rushers on their roster. They can take Miller here and then look for a QB at the start of Round 2.

Mock Draft: The Debut
With the Combine just days away I thought it would be a good time to post my first mock draft. You can put these in stone. This is exactly how the first round will unfold.
1. Carolina – Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn
This guy’s a beast. They’d much rather have the chance to draft Andrew Luck, but Fairley will be a good addition to the defense. And the good news for the Panthers is that they’ll still suck, so they might be able to get Luck next year.
2. Denver – Da’Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson
The Broncos only won 4 games last year, but 2 of those wins came against playoff teams. I didn’t get an actual quote from Mark, but I’m assuming that he thinks the Broncos are much better than their 4-12 record. Well their pass rush resembled a 4-12 team, so they should address that with this pick (unless they plan on having Tebow play both ways this year, which I’m sure he could do).
3. Buffalo – Cam Newton, QB, Auburn
He wins everywhere he goes. His track record would really be put to the test. The Bills would probably be better off going with a defensive playmaker like Patrick Peterson or Von Miller, but they might try to grab Newton thinking he can be their franchise QB.
4. Cincinnati – A.J. Green, WR, Georgia
He’d looked awesome in all of the games I watched him in this year. The Bengals should jump at the chance to take a WR early in the hopes that it’ll inflate his ego and he can one day create a unique persona that lands him a shitty reality TV show called “Green with Envy” (although I hope the show centers on his odd-couple relationship with the Eagles’ kicker and it’s called Green/Akers).
5. Arizona – Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri
I can only hope that this pick happens. I think Gabbert’s going to bust. It would set the team back another couple of years and let their existing young talent get fed up and jump ship. Instead they’ll probably pick-up a decent veteran QB and draft Von Miller.
6. Cleveland – Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M
It looks like Cleveland is switching from the 3-4 to the 4-3, so it could use some versatile talent on that side of the ball. Miller’s stock is rising pretty quickly, so it’s likely that he’ll go top 5.
7. San Francisco – Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU
This would suck.
8. Tennessee – Robert Quinn, DE, UNC
This will be an interesting player to watch. He was suspended for the whole season. He’ll need to show that he’s still in good shape and can play at the level he did last season. Mike Mayock and Michael Lombardi think this guy is going to blow up the combine and jump up a bit in the draft.
9. Dallas – Marcell Dareus, DE/DT, Alabama
Should be able to play DE in the 3-4.
10. Washington – Cameron Jordan, DE, Cal
Jordan’s stock is on the rise and he could go this high based on teams’ needs for a 3-4 DE which is probably where he will play. He looked good in Senior Bowl practice and improved his stock, but I wasn’t too impressed with some of the games I watched him in.
11. Houston – Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska
A great talent that has been overshadowed by Patrick Peterson. This would be the perfect scenario for the Texans.
12. Minnesota – JJ Watt, DE, Wisconsin
13. Detroit – Nate Solder, OT, Colorado
14. St. Louis – Julio Jones, WR, Alabama
Hopefully this pick doesn’t happen. My hope is that by this point in the draft their front office assumes the NFL skipped them this year since they’ve never knew the first round to last this long.
15. Miami – Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama
16. Jacksonville – Aldon Smith, DE/OLB, Missouri
17. New England – Tyron Smith, OT, USC
18. San Diego – Corey Liuget, DE/DT, Illinois
19. New York Giants – Anthony Castonzo, OT, BC
Keith, do you have any input on this pick? I just went with the best rated BC player since they probably fooled around with Coughlin’s daughter.
20. Tampa Bay – Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue
Non-stop motor
21. Kansas City – Akeem Ayers, OLB, UCLA
22. Indianapolis – Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin
23. Philadelphia – Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado
I need to apologize to Sinclair on this one. There’s a lot of buzz about Smith right now and he might be climbing up the draft boards. He’s not on the same level as Peterson or Amukamara, but it looks like he’ll end up as the #3 CB.
24. New Orleans – Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa
I don’t like this guy much. He just seems really boring to me. He didn’t seem to stand out much in any of the Iowa games I watched.
25. Seattle – Mike Pouncey, G/C, Florida
I think this pick would make the most sense. It could provide a little more quality on the line which is definitely needed. There would be a lot of interesting options if the draft played out this way. Locker would still be on the board. Justin Houston (DE/OLB, Georgia) would be a nice addition to the pass rush. Or they could go with a playmaker on offense like Titus Young (WR, Boise St). If Gabe Carimi slips to this spot he could be a good pick since it looks like he would be a better fit at RT.
26. Baltimore – Titus Young, WR, Boise St
27. Atlanta – Justin Houston, DE/OLB, Georgia
28. New England – Muhammad Wilkerson, DE/DT, Temple
29. Chicago – Derek Sherrod, OT, Miss St
30. New York Jets – Phil Taylor, NT, Baylor
Big fat man for a big fat coach.
31. Pittsburgh – Cameron Heyward, DE/DT, Ohio St.
32. Green Bay – Drake Nevis, DT, LSU
I really like this guy.

2011 Senior Bowl
The 2011 Senior Bowl was played this past Saturday for the sole purpose of giving the Mustacheers a football game to watch now that the season is over.
After watching the game, here are a few of my thoughts:
Jake Locker, like has happened on so many Saturdays, made a few nice throws, overthrew multiple receivers and was on the losing team. It’s too bad he wasn’t able to do more this week. He needs the postseason process to go well and get people excited about his upside, because he continues to show people that he isn’t ready to play QB in the NFL. I’m sure the Combine will be a better process for him. However, he’ll still have to do the throwing drills and I’d be shocked if he’s not overthrowing guys there too.
Von Miller (LB, Texas A&M) lived up to the hype he generated in practice and looked good during the game. People are excited about how scheme-diverse he’ll is. He can play OLB or ILB in a 3-4, OLB in 4-3 and possibly DE in a 4-3 in certain situations. It seems like his best value would be rushing the passer, so I think a 3-4 team will take him early.
The North’s O-line had a disappointing effort in the game. Nate Solder (OT, Colorado) and Anthony Castonzo (OT, Boston College) were not that impressive but are thought to be among the highest –rated Tackles in the draft. Solder was clearly beaten on two plays. Once against Sam Acho (DE, Texas) that resulted in a strip of Locker and again by Von Miller that resulted in a tackle-for-loss. Castonzo missed his man when he was pulling and then was abused by Brooks Reed (DE, Arizona) for a sack.
Leonard Hankerson (WR, Miami) was impressive. He’s 6’2” and used his frame effectively a few times to make catches. He just looked like a quality receiver.
I liked the play of Kendric Burney (CB,UNC). He’s only 5’9” and doesn’t have great speed, but was a decent tackler and is quick to break on the ball. Mayock called him a prototypical Cover 2 corner.
It sounds like a lot of people are high on Cameron Jordan (DE, Cal) after this week. According to most reports he was dominant in practices during the week. I didn’t see much from him during the game though. When I watched him in The Big Game against Stanford this year he wasn’t all that impressive either. He did draw double-teams in that game, so that’s a positive. Maybe he’s just better in a one-on-one practice setting.
Ryan Kerrigan (DE, Purdue), Brooks Reed (DE, Arizona) and Colin McCarthy (LB, Miami) all have non-stop motors.
