Draft Chat

Even though participation will likely be limited to 2 or 3 people, I'm starting up this NFL Draft Chat/Mailbag. Post your questions and you'll get answers from HCM's resident draft expert, me.

And all you critics of this site need to realize that you're taking shots at a blog that is referenced as "by far the worst site on the internet." So, I hope you're proud of yourselves.

What's the consensus on workout warrior Bruce Campbell? Where will he go? Is it true he said, "Shop Smart. Shop S-Mart" at the end of the combine?

He's an athletic freak who has potential because of that athleticism, but he's not a very polished player at this point. Sounds like scouts think he has too much bad tape. That being said, when the #8 pick rolls around I'd be surprised if Al Davis doesn't call him to join his Army of Darkness in Oakland.

What's funny is Trent Williams put up comparable numbers and by all accounts is a better player (although there are some concerns with him to), but I don't think Al Davis cares.

Do you think we'll draft ALL Trojans? Or does Pete know we can take people from schools? Not that I would mind...

What grade are you in?

I like Trent Williams a lot.
I also have an unreasonable fondness for Dan LeFevour. What round will he go in?

What team will have the worst draft?

Japeddo,
I think people are blowing Pete Carroll's college connections out-of-proportion. I think it helps that he has more insider knowledge of the USC prospects, but I don't think he'll reach for them. People are making the same connection with Carroll and guys he recruited but went to other schools. I'm hoping he puts more thought into the picks. One interesting Trojan is Charles Brown who most see as a later first-rounder. He's one of the best players in the draft for the zone-blocking schemes the Hawks will be using. Maybe they could trade down from 14 to a lower first and still have a chance at him.

Wanamaker,
I'd be OK with the Trent Williams pick, but I'm concerned that he projects as a better left tackle. At #6, the Hawks should be able to have a guy who doesn't have to transition into an unnatural position.

As for LeFevour, I think he rubbed a lot of people the wrong way by not throwing at the Combine. I thought he looked good at the Senior Bowl. He's mobile. He'll probably still be available on Day 3 and should go late 4th or early 5th.

Raiders will have the worst draft.

In the earlier comment about Williams I meant to say that he projects better as a right tackle.

How do you feel about the new 3 day format?

Personally I hate it. Any excuse to wake up early on a Saturday and start drinking is the type of thing I live for. But now? The 1st round on a Thursday night? Yuck.

Pete said...

I'm not a fan. It's lame that it starts at 4:30pm on a Thursday. If they were going to go with a 3 day format, they should have done the 1st round on Friday starting at 5pm. Then the 2nd and 3rd on Saturday starting around 11am or noon. The rest could start at 8am on Sunday. The one thing I do like about the format is it will give more time to review the picks that have been made and regroup before the next rounds. But I would much rather have it back to the way it was.

Extending it 3 days will allow us to watch Tebow cry in the green room for a much longer time.

Do you like the idea of trading the Hawks 2nd rounder for Marshawn Lynch?

Pete said...

I've been a big fan of Lynch since I saw the videos of him driving around on the trainer's cart after a Cal game. I became an even bigger fan of him when Erik told me a great story about what Lynch and a friend did during a class at Cal (I'll let Erik post the story).

But now he seems like kind of a fuck-up. I think he still has the ability to be a quality running back, but I think the 2nd round pick would be too risky at this point.

Erik said...

I'd be all for Lynch if he was like he was in Madden '08 for X-Box 360, in which a glitch in the game caused him to never age during Franchise Mode.

UPDATE
There's a fullback prospect out of Kentucky named John Conner. Apparently in a combine interview one team asked him about the phasing out of the true fullback and his response was: "The future's not set. There's no fate but what we make for ourselves."

Then the team asked why he wanted to play pro football and he said: "Easy money"

This didn't sit well so they called him a dipshit. His response: "Did you call 'moi' a dipshit?"

The team decided to end the interview at this point, but as he left, John offered this parting shot: "We got Skynet by the balls now, don't we?"

I also heard a scout being interviewed, and when they asked him about John Conner he enthusiastically said, "Have you SEEN this boy!?"
