2011 Senior Bowl

The 2011 Senior Bowl was played this past Saturday for the sole purpose of giving the Mustacheers a football game to watch now that the season is over.

After watching the game, here are a few of my thoughts:
Jake Locker, like has happened on so many Saturdays, made a few nice throws, overthrew multiple receivers and was on the losing team. It’s too bad he wasn’t able to do more this week. He needs the postseason process to go well and get people excited about his upside, because he continues to show people that he isn’t ready to play QB in the NFL. I’m sure the Combine will be a better process for him. However, he’ll still have to do the throwing drills and I’d be shocked if he’s not overthrowing guys there too.

Von Miller (LB, Texas A&M) lived up to the hype he generated in practice and looked good during the game. People are excited about how scheme-diverse he’ll is. He can play OLB or ILB in a 3-4, OLB in 4-3 and possibly DE in a 4-3 in certain situations. It seems like his best value would be rushing the passer, so I think a 3-4 team will take him early.

The North’s O-line had a disappointing effort in the game. Nate Solder (OT, Colorado) and Anthony Castonzo (OT, Boston College) were not that impressive but are thought to be among the highest –rated Tackles in the draft. Solder was clearly beaten on two plays. Once against Sam Acho (DE, Texas) that resulted in a strip of Locker and again by Von Miller that resulted in a tackle-for-loss. Castonzo missed his man when he was pulling and then was abused by Brooks Reed (DE, Arizona) for a sack.

Leonard Hankerson (WR, Miami) was impressive. He’s 6’2” and used his frame effectively a few times to make catches. He just looked like a quality receiver.

I liked the play of Kendric Burney (CB,UNC). He’s only 5’9” and doesn’t have great speed, but was a decent tackler and is quick to break on the ball. Mayock called him a prototypical Cover 2 corner.

It sounds like a lot of people are high on Cameron Jordan (DE, Cal) after this week. According to most reports he was dominant in practices during the week. I didn’t see much from him during the game though. When I watched him in The Big Game against Stanford this year he wasn’t all that impressive either. He did draw double-teams in that game, so that’s a positive. Maybe he’s just better in a one-on-one practice setting.

Ryan Kerrigan (DE, Purdue), Brooks Reed (DE, Arizona) and Colin McCarthy (LB, Miami) all have non-stop motors.

I was really hoping for Locker to play well in the Senior Bowl - if nothing else than to make another team pick him up earlier in the first round (aka not the Hawks). Not only do I think he's gonna be a bust in the NFL, but I also wanna see us make one more run with Hass at the helm, and see if the group Carrol has put together can solidify into a winner - I'm not saying we shouldn't be looking for the QB of the future now, but I think its lower on the list of priorities at this point - lets concentrate on beefing up the o-line and the defense...I'm sure I'll catch some shit for this one, so without further adieu, bring it on Locker/UW fans!

I think Locker needs a fresh start. Get him out of the Northwest. He won't succeed here. He's been too coddled by the media and he needs to do it on his own. Go to Tennessee or some shit.

I've got nothing against Locker. Seems like a good dude(r). But I don't think he's the right fit for us, don't thik he'll be a great QB, and don't think he's much of a leader, ala Tim Tebow.

Bring on Pouncey! Eh, DGP?

Pouncey would be a great pick for us I think - maybe even Jimmy Smith (Colorado) at Cornerback if Pouncey falls through - I don't know - I would like some DGP input on this too

i don't think any quarterback in the draft is ready for a rookie run in the NFL. Even if we do get a quarterback, Matt will still be the man. I would not be opposed to taking one so they can watch a true pro go to work. Know what Matt's secret to success is? Forearm strength fellas, forearm strenght. Is Jimmy Smith that big 6' something corner? please we do not need any more midgets at the corner position.

Here's some hardcore IN-PUT for ya Jimi - Jimmy Smith is indeed that 6'2 corner - I'm 100% with you on avoiding dwarves in our secondary...Now, onto more pressing business - to HELL with double group penetration - I'm looking for some DVDA!

i was thinking more horizontal, but sideways works. could get messy, and we will probably need a swing of some kind but hey.......sideways dual vagina douche attach it is. i'm going to need a little time to grow an appropriate mustache though.

Pouncey - I don't know too much about him other than he's a good player. His twin brother was able to contribute right away on a Super Bowl team, so I think that speaks to his ability a bit. Most say he's not at the same level of his brother, but he is still rated pretty high. He's probably the best interior lineman in the draft so he definitely makes sense for the Hawks. I would think he'll still be available at 25. I did see him having trouble with snaps early on in the opening game against Miami (OH), but he's had a whole season to (hopefully) improve.

Jimmy Smith - great size for a corner. He's another guy who pulled out of the Senior Bowl. I watched some tape of him against Oklahoma. He looked willing in run support, but you would like him to be a more sure and solid tackler given his size. It did look like he was able to get physcial with the reeceivers and disrupt their routes. I think #25 might be a bit early for him. He's probably the 4 or 5 best corner. I do think CB could be a good pick for the Hawks, so I'll try to take a closer look at some of these guys who are rated behind the 2 top corners (Patrick Peterson and Prince Amukamara).
