I'm working the Australian Open, and color commentator Whit Sheppard (some dumb Aussie) just claimed that the wave was invented at the Mexico World Cup in 1986. I've always been under the impression that it came about at Husky Stadium in the early 70s.
Now, here's the thing. The guys calling the match aren't actually in Australia, they're outside in a production truck in the DirecTV parking lot. Should I go find this guy and let him know he's an idiot?
Then kick his ass?

Does Whit Sheppard know that Bosnians and Serbs throwing chairs at each other is not called "the wave". Maybe that's why he was confused.
Uh, guys, I'm an American, what can I say? Though I'd love to have a slick Aussie accent. Think the original poster must have me confused with a bonafide announcer from Down Under... no one's perfect, I guess. Main thing: keep enjoying the tennis : )

Ok, here's the hilarious thing. I think I did confuse the announcers, Whit is actually American. And the Australian announcer that said this was actually named Matt Brown or something like that.
But seriously, who posted that last comment? No way it was actually Whit Sheppard.

New Zealand... pretty tough to separate the Aussie from the Kiwi accent, though... and enjoy the rest of the tennis... hardly can expect better than Verdasco-Nadal gave us last night/this morning. over and out...

Well, bottom line, the wave was NOT started during the 1986 World Cup. And if we really are in contact with Whit Sheppard (which I still don't buy) I guess the relaying of that information was the real goal this whole time.
